Castro resigns as Cuban president

From the Guardian.
The current US president, George Bush, urged the international community to use Castro's resignation as an opportunity to help Cuba, which is home to 11.2 million people, to democracy.

Speaking from a news conference in Rwanda during a five-country Africa trip, Bush said: 'The international community should work with the Cuban people to begin to build institutions that are necessary for democracy.

His calls were backed by Downing Street. A spokesman for the prime minister, Gordon Brown, said: 'Our position on Cuba is a long-standing one, which is that we have always sought to encourage a peaceful transition to democracy in Cuba.'
Perhaps because it is easier to rig an election than a coup or revolution?

I may show my extreme tunnel vision here but what the hell. Why is Castro so bad? Why does anyone think Cuba need Democracy? I just did a real quick google because my history of Castro is nonexistent. So he hates gays, he has starved groups and killed some people. In the grand scheme of things that almost seems friendly? Every country has done and is doing this and far worse. Hell, we water board, illegally jail, rig our own elections and setup dictators. That is just what comes to mind in 5 seconds. Democracy has not done a lot for Iraq. Not that they had a bed of roses but I am not sure anything is better. Maybe just the people who had it good or bad got shuffled a little. They call what we have a democracy yet our current leader seems a little dictatory to me. I mean aren't we up to like 70% of troops and 60% of the general population against the Iraq war now? Not very democratic that we are still there is it?

Bush said a few months ago that the U.S. had been waiting for Castro to die and would not accept a handoff to his brother. WTF! This sounds like choice of Cuban's not Bush.

Before we worry about guaranteeing democracy in Cuba, perhaps we should put some effort towards guaranteeing democracy in Florida.
